Letting Go

Letting Go

This past weekend, my family and I made the tough decision of euthanizing our dog. Ziggy was 12 years old and in declining health. I knew we were approaching the end of our time with him, but it did not make this decision any easier.

For the past several months, I have been looking for specific signs that it was time or he was ready. They never appeared. Those very specific signs that made me feel better about making this decision for him never happened. A sign finally happened that made this decision seem like the best one, still not one of the ones I was looking for. And when the day came, I knew it was the right decision.

Sometimes we focus so much on specific signs that we completely ignore the ones that are right in our faces. We want change but we are so scared to step outside of what we know to get it. We continue doing the same thing, thinking the same way, holding on so tight to the way things are even when they are no longer serving us.

There are so many instances in life where we can look back and say, "I wish I did that sooner, or What was I waiting for?" Sometimes we need to be so uncomfortable with what is to take the step to experience what could be.

In regards to pain, we often continue doing the same things because we know them. We know what doesn't hurt or what offers temporary relief. We know what to expect from a movement, modality, maneuver. So do our bodies, and this is often when we plateau. We have to be at least a little uncomfortable in this world to see more progress.

We do need safe. We do need comfort. And we have to think outside the box. We need novelty. We need different. We need both. Are you open to seeing all the signs or just the ones that you are comfortable with?

Stay curious,
